HavaMe

Thinking of getting a Havanese? Well I tell you the secrets of my breed that other Havanese Pooch owners won't want you to know about!

But before you read on, owning a Havanese or any dog is a life time commitment.   I think you should read this fabulous guide to owning a Havanese that gives you everything you need to know about my breed including some great training tips and ideas.

So, if yo are sitting comfortably, I'm ready to begin......

I'm told I'm like chocolate; once you have a Havanese, you'll want more.......

THIS IS ME
Aren't I just gorgeous?

  • I'm small but I'm not fragile
  • I've got large, dark expressive eyes that make me seem intelligent but mischievous too
  • I carry my plumed tail jauntily over my back
  • My coat is my crowning glory.  It's long and silky that can be straight, wavy or even curly. The wavy coat is easier for humans to maintain.
  • I come in many colours from white to shades of cream and champagne to gold, black, silver and chocolate
  • Some humans are a little lazy and prefer to have my coat clipped to prevent mats and tangles Grrrrrr!

MY MANNERS

Why oh why would those nasty
humans clip my coat?
  • Not only do I attract admirers with my unique coat and attractive size and shape, its my delightful temperament that is winning my breed increased popularity
  • I am very friendly and am devoted to my human owner
  • I am a social, easygoing sort and get on incredibly well with all sorts of humans, especially children and other animals in the family pack
  • I'm not a delicate sort and hate being carried around or overly pampered and just love rough and tumble games in the park or back yard.
  • Unlike other small breeds, I don't bark unless absolutely necessary.  I'm good at letting humans know of company coming to visit! Nor am I aggressive or cowardly.
  • I am generally not shy with other humans and doggies

 HISTORICAL TAILS

Havana Cuba
One of the oldest cities in the world
by Artist and Printmaker Michael Gage
  • I'm the only breed of dog native to Cuba. Indeed my breed name, Havanese, is named for the city of Havana in my native Cuba.
  • I'm kinda related to the Bichon family of dogs who were treading the earth along with Aristotle! You might know my cousins, the Bichon Frise and Lowchen but I'm also related to the rarer Coton de Tulear, Bolognese and Maltese.
  • In early 1700's I was a popular lapdog to the aristoracy; that was my job then and this is my job now, to be your constant companion.
  • I've been known as Blanquito de la Cubano (White Cuban) but I'm now known in Cuba as "Bichon Habanero" or Bichon Havanese due to the many colours found in my coat today.
  • Many Cubans moved to Florida and other Central American countries and some brought their little dogs with them. I'm very popular in America but lesser known in the UK

LIFE WITH A HUMAN

Are you and I right for each other?
  • Don't be put off offering a home to my breed if you live in an apartment or have very little in the way of a back garden because I don't need much space!
  • I love walkies and despite my size, can keep up with you where ever you go
  • My size means that I have an advantage over other larger breeds when traveling because my carrier easily fits into your car or under the seat in front of you on an internal flight.
  • I need to be house-trained right from being a puppy since I live IN your home, not outside, in the garage or on the porch
  • I am a social creature. Not only do I want to be by your side all the time, but I love the company of other dogs and cats!
  • I'm not good left alone and suffer from stress and anxiety when separated from my human family
  • I'm a happy playmate for children but I like my human owner to supervise their offspring if they are below school age just to prevent accident or injury
  • My coat is high maintenance whether clipped or left in full show coat. I need grooming properly everyday to avoid tangles and mats and need your commitment to do just that.  Many owners enjoy see this as bonding time with me.
  • On the plus side, my coat only sheds very minimally and because my coat is light and soft rather than oily, I don't give off much odour.
  • Me and my puppy clip
  • I don't produce much dander as do other breeds.  This means that I'm considered hypoallergenic and a good breed choice for people have have allergic reactions to dogs. Please visit a Havanese home first though to see if any allergies are triggered before getting one of me.
